Beginning with the first rudimentary lighting systems, we trace the historical advancements that have led to the sophisticated, technology-driven solutions used today. Key developments such as the transition from bonfires and battery-operated lamps to modern LED lighting systems are discussed. We explore the significant contributions of industry leaders like ADB Safegate, TKH Group NV, Eaton Corporation, and Honeywell International Inc., in enhancing the functionality and sustainability of airport lighting. The paper also delves into the shift towards energy-efficient and eco-friendly LED lighting, acknowledging the substantial savings in energy consumption and reduced environmental impact. Looking forward, we consider the potential of emerging technologies such as OLEDs and smart lighting systems integrated with sensors, which promise to optimize airfield operations further. Through a comprehensive review of the past, present, and future of airport lighting, this paper highlights the continuous innovation that shapes the safety and efficiency of modern aviation.

Citation (APA 7)

Clark, A.
