A visual approach in aviation is an IFR procedure where, with Air Traffic Control (ATC) authorization, an aircraft can proceed visually to land, clear of clouds, at its intended airport. It's essentially a streamlined version of an instrument approach, bypassing some of the formal procedures when weather conditions permit.

Historical Context and Evolution[edit | edit source]

Early Aviation[edit | edit source]

In the early days of aviation, VFR were the norm. Pilots relied on their visual acuity and situational awareness to navigate and land.

Rise of IFR[edit | edit source]

As aviation grew and aircraft became more complex, the need for instrument flight rules (IFR) emerged, allowing pilots to fly in adverse weather conditions.

Visual Approaches as a Bridge[edit | edit source]

Visual approaches were developed as a way to integrate IFR operations with visual conditions, providing a more efficient and streamlined approach when weather allowed.

Continued Refinement[edit | edit source]

Over time, the concept of visual approaches has been refined, with the development of standardized procedures, such as charted visual flight procedures (CVFPs) at certain airports.

Focus on Safety and Efficiency[edit | edit source]

The evolution of visual approaches has been driven by a desire to enhance both the safety and efficiency of air traffic operations.

Current Practices[edit | edit source]

Today, visual approaches are a common and widely used procedure, particularly at airports with favorable weather conditions and a high volume of IFR traffic.
