Analyzing the Impossible Turn
Richard Melnyk et al., U.S. Government Work | January 2024
This paper explores the feasibility of executing a maneuver commonly referred to as the “Impossible Turn” in general aviation. Using a Cessna 206 with a Garmin G1000 suite, the team conducted flight testing to validate a model for turning back to the runway following engine failure. The study found that with a 45-degree bank and specific flap settings, a safe return may be possible under defined conditions.
